Nude Figure Drawing/Painting
Greetings, all,
Upland will host a figure session with a nude model next Monday, November 17, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Pillar Arts Alliance Center in the College Mall. Our last nude session was in January 2023, so it’s been almost three years. Full details follow:
Rationale. At least since Leonardo’s anatomy studies, artists have drawn the nude figure, both male and female — first as an important part of their training, but also as a subject worthy in its own right. There’s an old truism that if you can draw the nude, you can draw anything. The human body is complex, and often our emotional responses get in the way of seeing it as just another set of forms, another pattern of light, middle and dark values. Wherever you are at in your artist trajectory, the challenge is worth your best efforts.
Model. Mariah models regularly for the Bloomington Co-op. She is a 34-year-old Bloomington native, published poet, multimedia artist, professional special needs nanny, wildlife rehabber, bartender, and a mother to three young children. She is passionate about providing children with the empathetic support, confidence, and curiosity they need to thrive, and she joyfully shares her love of art, music, and nature with her children and the children in her care. In her free time, she loves to play her ukulele, work with plants, attend concerts, write essays and poetry, paint, cook, and spend time in nature. She dreams of owning and operating a small farm with her partner, Cody, so they may work toward self-sufficiency and provide their community with locally grown food.
Date/Location. We are meeting on Monday, November 17, instead of the usual Tuesday, because Pillar is closed on Monday. That will give our model and us privacy. Please enter through the outside door between the south mall entrance with the big Target logo and the old Macy's. We will have an Upland yard sign marking the entrance. Please see attached map. If you arrive late, the door will be unlocked. Come on in.
No photographs! Please leave your cameras at home and your cellphone cameras in your bags.
Program. We will start with several short gesture poses, then a 10/15-minute pose. The remainder of the time, about two and a half hours, will be one pose, alternating 25-minute poses with five-minute breaks.
Drop cloth. If you work in oil, watercolor, pastel or other “messy” medium, please bring and use a drop cloth to protect the floor or table.
Facilities. The room has professional lighting and the model will be on a raised platform. There are tables and chairs, but you will need to supply all other materials. If you want to use a table easel or standing easel, there should be room. There is a rest room inside Pillar.
Parking. There is ample free parking in the College Mall lot.
Lunch. There are no plans for an organized lunch after the session, but some of you may want to organize a group lunch in the food court or at a nearby restaurant on your own.
Fee. There is no charge for this session. Upland is paying the model’s fee. Huge thanks to Henry Leck for generously covering Pillar's rental fee.
Whether you are a veteran or a novice at drawing/painting the figure, we encourage you to come and try your hand at this major artistic motif.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at ccookman@iu.edu Please do not click the reply button and send your query to the entire group.
Warmest regards,
claude

Bedford Art Gallery
I would like to invite you to paint around the square in Bedford. You are welcome to come anytime from 9:00 -1pm on Tuesday, September 23rd. The meeting place is the Wiley Art Gallery - 14th and J Street, a half block from the square. There’s plenty of parking behind the gallery. And the gallery will be open for restrooms, water and a fridge. Bring a lunch if you think you will need it! There are limestone buildings all around, statues in the Square, and lot of old-fashioned looking storefronts.
We’ve had a very long dry spell. However, it looks like there’s a possibility of some rain on Tuesday. If there is, all around the square there are overhanging storefronts where you could set up and be out of the rain. There’s also a front porch on the gallery that’s protected. As another treat, a new show is up in the gallery with all the Lawrence County Art Association artists participating. The theme of the show is FALL COLORS. The Colored Pencil Group will be working inside the gallery on their own projects. This is a great chance to work on your cityscapes.

Sally's Home
Join Sally Taylor at her home on Snow Road: This next Tuesday, September 9th, you are invited to our flower farm for an outdoor painting session in Southwest Monroe County on our farm. Painting times will be 10:00am to roughly 3:00pm, come and go as you please. As of now the weather is showing high 70's and clear.
Our address is 9300 S Snow Road, Bloomington, IN 47403. It is easily google mapped; if you need additional directions please feel free to contact Sally on her cell 812.325.6007. From the west side of Bloomington, take SR 45 west just past Stanford to Breeden Road. Make a left and stay on Breeden road (Breeden Road turns into Snow Rd at the Rockeast Road intersection). We are on the right side of Snow Rd, a few driveways past Lee Phillips Road (which is on the left). Upland signs will be put out.
We have a beautiful dahlia flower farm in bloom now. It has been a tough year and we do not have as many flowers in bloom as we had this time last year, but there is still good color and you can get up close to the flowers if you wish. There is a red cabin just past the flowers, a small greenhouse with an old timber foundation, a lovely small pond with rock outcroppings, old metal implements and trees that all is within a hundred yards of the driveway and easily accessible. There are bird feeders and we have huge red pines lining our driveway that are over 100+ years old.
We have a hunting cabin in the back pasture, with plots of corn. Jeff or I can transport you to the back pastures via the side by side if you aren't up for a hike.
Start parking at the garage and in the drive in front of our house. Coffee cake, fresh brewed coffee and water bottles will be provided. The house is open for bathroom breaks.
We hope to see you Tuesday!

Farmhouse Cafe
Join Barbara Coffman at the delightful Farm House Cafe & Tea Room . . . 5171 Bean Blossom Rd, Nineveh, Indiana
This is an old farmhouse, way out in the country and converted into a small restaurant, with indoor, porch, and patio seating. There are several old buildings on the property, full of "stuff" -- old windows, iron bed frames, furniture, decorator items, equipment, bird houses, you name it. There are also plantings and flowers, and a greenhouse. The parking area is small, so carpooling is recommended. It's about 45 minutes from Bloomington, past Nashville. Here is a link to the Facebook page where you can see the grounds, buildings, and food offerings.
Let's meet at 9:30 or whenever you choose to arrive. The restaurant is open from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Have lunch when and if you like, and stay as long as you like -- the property is open until 5:00. Note -- the bathroom in the restaurant is upstairs.
